Winner of Tennessee Right to Life Oratory Contest to
Compete at National Right to Life Oratory Contest 2004

Vanessa Hale, winner of the Annual Tennessee Right to Life High School Oratory Contest, will be competing at the annual National Right to Life Oratory Contest 2004 to be held during the National Right to Life Convention in Crystal City, VA. The state competition was held on May 22, 2004 at Aquinas College.

“We are very proud of Vanessa and of all of the participants in this year’s oratory contest,” stated Michelle Tassart, Oratory Contest Coordinator for Tennessee Right to Life. “The students did a wonderful job and we are looking forward to having Tennessee represented at the National Right to Life Oratory Contest in July.”

Over 100 students participated in 28 local contests across Tennessee, with 26 students advancing to the State Contest. The participants were required to write an original speech on abortion, infanticide, or euthanasia that was five to seven minutes in length. They were encouraged to use up-to-date, factual information in the construction of the speeches.

Ms. Hale, who won the Coffee County Right to Life Oratory Contest on April 22nd, will have the opportunity to attend the National Right to Life Convention or the National Teens for Life Convention that runs concurrently with the national convention. In addition to travel expenses for the NRLC Convention and Oratory Contest, Vanessa received a $500 scholarship for first place. Tabitha Mowen, the second place winner, received a $250 scholarship, Tim Storey received a $100 scholarship for third place, and Bethany Luzader received a $50 scholarship as the fourth place winner.

“All of the students did so well” stated Brian Best, emcee of the event and Nashville Right to Life board member “The judges had a tough decision in trying to rank so many well-written speeches. We congratulate the winners and look forward to next year’s competition.”
