Tennessee Right to Life Celebrates Election Victories
Abortion Proponents Pushed Back in Targeted Primary Contests
August 1, 2002—Nashville, TN: Officials of the state’s oldest and largest pro-life organization expressed “profound satisfaction” in the outcome of several high pro-file contests across the state in which abortion played a prominent role. “Pro-life Tennesseans of both political parties spoke with one voice and the message is clear: restore protections for women and unborn children now,” announced Brian Harris, President of Tennessee Right to Life.
Harris pointed to races where abortion was regarded as a central issue including the 4th U.S. Congressional race and the 21st state senatorial race in Nashville. In each case, pro-life candidates held back avid abortion supporters in Democratic primaries.
“Senator Douglas Henry’s victory in the 21st district is particularly encouraging since his primary opponent’s entire campaign was based on abortion rights. Despite efforts from pro-abortion leaders, Senator Henry was easily returned to the Legislature.”
In both the fourth and fifth Congressional districts, national pro-abortion leaders and organizations including Emily’s List and NARAL (National Abortion Rights Action League) poured resources into the candidacies of Gayle Ray and Fran Marcum. In the end, Tennesseans rejected the extreme pro-abortion position of both which included full tax funding for abortion.
“Tennessee Right to Life worked tirelessly in the last few weeks to inform and mobilize pro-life voters across the state. We succeeded in bringing two pro-life Democrats through tough primary challenges and we couldn’t be happier,” commented Harris referring to Douglas Henry and Lincoln Davis. “Now we turn toward the opportunities facing our movement 95 days from now.”
