U.S. Supreme Court Refuses to Take Up TN Choose Life
Plate Case, Sixth Circuit Court’s Pro-Plate Ruling Stands
Tennessee Right to Life Thanks Supporters; Calls On Bredesen to Expedite Production

Today the United States Supreme Court let stand the 6th Circuit Court ruling upholding the constitutionality of Tennessee’s Choose Life Plate. “Clearly we are grateful for the court’s announcement this morning”, said Brian Harris, President of Tennessee Right to Life. “We now call on Governor Bredesen to immediately expedite the production and distribution of this popular plate,” said Harris. “Tennesseans have waited long enough to get this plate on the road and to generate proceeds for agencies which help women and families facing difficult pregnancies.”

Tennessee Right to Life led the legislative fight to pass the Choose Life plate into law in 2003. The plate was authorized following overwhelming support by state legislators who approved the plate 80-14 in the state House and 26-4 in the state Senate. The plate narrowly escaped veto by Governor Bredesen who opposes the Choose Life plate and who is considered to have strictly limited involvement by the state Attorney General in defending the plate.

“It’s been an enormous undertaking to raise the necessary funds to fight the well-funded ACLU and Planned Parenthood,” said Harris. “The people have spoken, the legislature has spoken, and now the federal courts have spoken.” Harris continued. “It’s time for Mr. Bredesen to do the right thing and allow these plates to serve the positive purposes for which they were approved.”
