Because of a radical 4-1 ruling by the Tennessee Supreme Court in 2000, Tennessee now boasts a more “fundamental” right to abortion than that recognized by Roe v. Wade or the Federal Constitution. Consequently, basic commonsense protections such as a 48 hour waiting period, informed consent for women considering abortions, a hospitalization requirement for second trimester abortions, and the regulation of abortion facilities in our state have all been struck down as violating the newly discovered “right to abortion” in the Tennessee Constitution.

If you think that such protective laws are appropriate or if you think that the voters—not four judges—should decide such questions, your state legislators need to hear from you right now.

SJR127is a Senate Joint Resolution which would allow a statewide public vote on the question of abortion and tax payer funding in Tennessee. After a decade long struggle by Tennessee's pro-life movement to bring SJR127 to the ballot for a public vote, both chambers of the General Assembly gave first approval to the proposed constitutional amendment in 2009.

As with every proposed amendment to the Tennessee Constitution, the resolution must now be passed by the General Assembly for a second time requiring a 2/3 super majority in this legislative session. Only then can it be placed on the ballot in 2014 so the citizens of our state can FINALLY have their say. Join Tennessee Right to Life in urging our legislators to once again overwhelmingly pass SJR 127 during 2011 so that you can have your say in 2014.
