Mother’s Day Bulletin Insert (back) Many of
us contemplate the age-old question of how to deter old age. If we think the answer is in exercise and
good nutrition, we may be missing something.
God’s direction for long life and well-being is to “Honor you father
and mother as the Lord your God has commanded you, that your days may be long
and it may be well with you.” (Deut. 5:16)
It is also His guide for our behavior and attitude toward our mothers. Mothers
everywhere share certain traits. Generations
of children have heard, “You are just like your father!” or “I hope someday
you have a kid just like you!” Such
dubious compliments seem to be part of a package that comes with a mouth
willing to kiss a boo-boo regardless of location, a set of eyes in the back
of the head, and a nose that can scent a first cigarette from 100 paces. Best of all, it includes a heart with a
tremendous capacity to love, event at our most unlovable moments. Of
course, no mother is perfect. Maybe
yours called you by your sibling’s or dog’s name or habitually embarrassed
you in front of your friends. Or your
mother may have been so dysfunctional you never felt that unconditional love
at all. But
whatever her flaws, your mother did one thing right. It’s possible her voyage was stormy when
she learned she had a tiny companion on board, yet she allowed you to stow
away in the hold till the proper time for your launching into the world. We are admonished in Romans 13:7 to give honor
to whom it is due. What better reason
to honor our moms than for allowing us the gift of life! The
fifth commandment promises a long and happy life, but it also brings the joy
of making our dear mother feel appreciated and loved. On the Mother’s Day and every day, let us
give her the honor she deserves. |
